What Is Peyronie's Disease?

Peyronie's disease is scar tissue (called plaque) that forms inside the penis, often after minor injury during sex or activity that you may not even remember. Because the scar tissue doesn't stretch, erections bend toward it.

It's far more common than most men realize, and it's nothing to be embarrassed about. Many men wait years before talking to anyone. Getting evaluated early matters: the first 6-18 months, when pain and curvature can still change, is often the best time to start treatment.

Shockwave therapy offers a non-invasive option for men who want to avoid injections or surgery, or who aren't ready for either.

Does This Sound Familiar?

  • A new bend or curve in your erection
  • Pain during erections or intercourse
  • A firm lump or band you can feel under the skin
  • An indentation, narrowing, or loss of length
  • Erections that aren't as firm as they used to be

If any of these apply, a confidential consultation can help you understand what's going on and what your options are.

How Shockwave Therapy Helps Peyronie's

Reduces Pain

Pain relief is where shockwave therapy has the strongest evidence for Peyronie's. Many men find erections become noticeably more comfortable during treatment.

Remodels Scar Tissue

Focused acoustic waves target the fibrous plaque, stimulating the body's tissue-remodeling process around the scarred area.

Improved blood flow illustration

Supports Erectile Function

Peyronie's often comes with ED. Shockwave therapy improves blood flow to erectile tissue, the same mechanism behind our ED treatment.

Peyronie's Treatment in Portland, Oregon

Multnomah Medical Clinic has provided shockwave therapy for men's health since 2019. From our clinic in Happy Valley, we see men from Portland, Beaverton, Lake Oswego, Tigard, Gresham, Clackamas, and across Oregon and Southwest Washington.

We use focused shockwave technology, which reaches deeper tissue than the radial-only devices many "wave therapy" clinics use. Your plan is tailored to how long you've had symptoms, how much pain you have, and whether ED is part of the picture.

We'll be straightforward about what to expect. Shockwave therapy is most reliable for relieving pain and supporting erectile function, and results for curvature vary. If your curvature is severe, we'll talk through every option, including when a urology referral makes sense.

Also dealing with weaker erections? ED and Peyronie's often go together. See how shockwave therapy treats erectile dysfunction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about shockwave therapy treatments at our clinic.

Can shockwave therapy help Peyronie's disease?
Yes. Shockwave therapy is used to reduce pain from Peyronie's, target the scar tissue (plaque), and support erectile function. Pain relief has the strongest clinical support. Results for curvature are less consistent, so we'll give you a realistic picture at your consultation.
Will shockwave therapy straighten my curve?
Some men see improvement in curvature, but it isn't guaranteed. Shockwave therapy is most reliable for easing pain and improving erection quality. If straightening is your main goal, we may recommend combining treatment with a penile traction device, and for severe curvature we'll discuss a urology referral.
When is the best time to start treatment?
Earlier is generally better. In the first 6-18 months, when pain is present and the curve may still be changing, treatment can help keep things from getting worse and ease discomfort. Men with longer-standing Peyronie's can still benefit, especially for associated ED.
Is the treatment painful?
Most men feel little to no pain, usually describing a light tapping sensation. The intensity is adjusted for comfort, and no anesthesia or needles are involved.
How many sessions will I need?
A typical course is 6-12 sessions, once or twice per week. Your plan will be set at your consultation based on your symptoms and goals.
Is there any downtime?
No. You can return to your normal activities, including sexual activity, right after each session.
Can it help with ED caused by Peyronie's?
Yes. Many men with Peyronie's also have weaker erections. Shockwave therapy improves blood flow to erectile tissue, the same way it treats erectile dysfunction, so both issues can be addressed in the same treatment plan.
Is my visit confidential?
Absolutely. Your consultation and treatment are private, and our team works with men's health concerns every day. There's no judgment and no pressure to commit.
Is shockwave therapy covered by insurance?
Most insurance plans don't cover shockwave therapy for Peyronie's. We offer payment plans and can walk you through financing options.
