Why Tennis Elbow Keeps Coming Back

Despite the name, most people with tennis elbow have never played tennis. It's common in carpenters, mechanics, painters, office workers, gardeners, and anyone whose day involves repetitive gripping and lifting.

Over time, that strain causes small tears and wear in the tendon that attaches your forearm muscles to the outside of your elbow. It's more a worn-out tendon than an inflamed one, which is why ice, ibuprofen, and rest only take the edge off.

Cortisone shots can quiet the pain for a while, but they don't repair the tendon, and studies have linked them to more relapses later. Shockwave therapy works the other way: it helps the tendon heal so the pain doesn't keep returning.

Does This Sound Familiar?

  • Pain on the outside of your elbow when you grip, lift, or shake hands
  • Picking up a coffee cup or a gallon of milk hurts
  • Your grip feels weak, or you've started dropping things
  • Rest and a brace help, but the pain comes right back
  • A cortisone shot worked for a few weeks, then wore off

If a few of these sound like you, shockwave therapy may be a good fit, especially if your elbow has been hurting for more than a couple of months.

Why Shockwave Therapy for Tennis Elbow?

Shockwave therapy is one of the most-studied treatments for chronic tennis elbow. It uses focused acoustic waves to restart the healing process in a tendon that has stalled, with no needles, incisions, or medication.

How Shockwave Therapy Heals Tennis Elbow

Restores Blood Flow

Tendons have a poor blood supply, which is why tennis elbow heals so slowly. Shockwaves stimulate new blood vessel growth, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the damaged tendon.

Rebuilds the Tendon

Acoustic waves activate your body's repair process, prompting the tendon to lay down new, healthy collagen in place of worn-out tissue.

Relieves Pain

Shockwave therapy calms overactive pain signals in the tendon, so everyday tasks like gripping and lifting stop hurting as healing progresses.

Scott H

"Multnomah Medical has helped to heal a very painful left shoulder after surgery that I was suffering with for 17 years. After the first treatment I began to feel better by the next day. Now I am going to have a painful right hip treated along with my left knee. For the first time ever at age 63 I am starting to feel young again as my pain dissipates each day! I am excited about my future without pain as I've known it for so many years. This has been a miracle for me and that is priceless! Thank you Multnomah Medical for the help to live a better, more emotionally available life for me and my wife as a result of your treatment for my joint pain."

"The staff at [Multnomah Medical] were great! They were all very professional, friendly, and helpful. They answered my questions fully and completely and during the treatments were always concerned about my comfort. At the completion of the treatment cycle I am already feeling the positive effects and reduction in the pain I had been experiencing. I would highly recommend them for soft tissue treatments."

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about shockwave therapy treatments at our clinic.

Does shockwave therapy work for tennis elbow?
Shockwave therapy is one of the most-researched treatments for chronic tennis elbow, and clinical trials show meaningful improvements in pain and grip strength. It works best for elbow pain that has lasted more than a couple of months and hasn't improved with rest, bracing, or physical therapy.
Is shockwave therapy better than a cortisone shot?
They work differently. A cortisone shot can calm pain quickly, but it doesn't heal the tendon, and research has linked it to more relapses later on. Shockwave therapy works more gradually by helping the tendon repair itself, with no needles or steroids.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients complete 6-8 sessions over 3-4 weeks. We'll set your plan at your consultation based on how long you've had symptoms and how severe they are.
Is the treatment painful?
You'll feel a firm tapping, which can be uncomfortable over the most tender spot. We adjust the intensity to keep you comfortable, and any discomfort fades as soon as the session ends.
Can I keep working during treatment?
Yes. There's no downtime. We recommend going easy on heavy gripping and lifting for a day or two after each session.
Do you treat golfer's elbow too?
Yes. Golfer's elbow is the same type of tendon problem on the inner side of the elbow, and it responds to a very similar treatment plan.
How quickly will I see results?
Many patients notice less pain within a few weeks. Because the tendon is rebuilding, improvement usually keeps building for 2-3 months after your last session.
Is it covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan. We're happy to help you check your benefits, and affordable payment plans are available.
Who should not have shockwave therapy?
It's not recommended during pregnancy, over areas with cancer or active infection, or for people on certain blood thinners. If you've had a cortisone shot in the elbow recently, we may wait a few weeks before starting. We'll review your health history at your consultation.
