Trimix: Injectable Medication for Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Trimix is a combination of three drugs that, when injected into the shaft of the penis, produce an erection.

A standard mix might consist of Papaverine, Phentolamine, and Alprostadil (prostaglandin E1), but the specific drugs and their quantities can vary based on individual patient needs.

This therapy for erectile dysfunction is typically explored when a patient doesn't find success with common first-line treatments, such as oral ED medications like PDE-5 inhibitors.

How does TriMix Work?

Upon administration, the drugs in this injectable medication create a vasodilating effect. When injected into the proper area along the shaft, the corpus cavernosum, parts of the penile tissue relax, dilate, and become filled with blood, resulting in an erection.

The combination typically starts to work within 15 minutes. It is advisable to wait around 10-30 minutes before engaging in sexual activity, and the erection should last approximately an hour. It's never recommended to use it more than once within 24 hours.

Is it safe?

Before considering this treatment option, there are several safety considerations to discuss with your doctor. Inform your healthcare provider if you have any medical issues, such as:

  • Problems with your penis, such as curvature or birth defects
  • Bleeding problems
  • Penile infection
  • Red or itchy penis
  • Conditions that cause thickened or slower blood flow
  • If you take a blood thinner, or if you bruise easily
  • Peyronie's disease

Be aware of potential side effects. If you decide to use Trimix, contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Curving of the penis with pain during an erection
  • Erection lasts for 4 to 6 hours
  • Swelling or pain in the testes
  • Bleeding or spotting from the urethra

Are men satisfied with TriMix treatment?

In terms of erection quality, roughly 70% of men report attaining an erection suitable for sex after injecting the medication. However, some users complain about the inconvenience of administration.

Moreover, just like with PDE5 inhibitors, there is no guarantee that this treatment will be a suitable long-term solution for any given patient's erectile dysfunction. This is because it doesn't address the core blood vessel-related problems often at the root of ED.
